What's the best gift you've ever given?
The entire Kiss catalogue as an Xmas present in 2007.
-Ronnie
Where do you guys rehearse?
Soundworks on Faversham street Marrickville, we're actually heading there later tonight. True story.
Ronnie, when are you gonna get that Euro beast back on the road and come for a ride?
as soon as I can get a new engine in it, I can't wait to get back on the road! I miss ridin' my 'cycle like crazy!
Ronnie, that's sweet as. I'm getting a dolls inspired tatt. Love ain't pretty. Inspired by one of there songs. <3
Awesome! I'd love to see it.
What was the 'real job', Ronnie?
Factory work, forklifts, packing, labor etc. it was great because I got a motorcycle and it gave me perspective on how it's really not my place in the 9 to 5 world.
I don't date either Ronnie and I'm afraid I cannot reveal my identity haha
Ah the anonymity of the internet, I don't know if it makes me laugh or wanna throw up. Either way, happy stalking!
In the mean time buy some stuff www.thebandlust.com/store
Ronnie are you single? If you are, wanna go out sometime? ; )
Yep, I don't go on dates, who are you?
Can you recommend any places in Sydney to go to for an Ace Frehley tattoo?
Mattoo at Bondi Ink, he's the man!
What was the worst advice you've ever received?
"Get a real job", worst year of my life and a complete waste of time.
-Ronnie
can we please enter ron in this? the charity wont know what hit them! http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=158261760868831&index=1
Haha oh god, I'm actually up for doing that, that'd be hilarious. "Shall we start the bidding at a Gibson Les Paul?"
-Ronnie
Ronnie. How does one get lucky enough to have you as a guitar teacher?
Just email me at ronnie@thebandlust.com or find me on facebook and message me, my name is "Ronnie Simmons" haha, look forward to hearing from you!

Ronnie, is your 'lipstick killer' tatt inspired by 'new York dolls'?
Yep! I got in 2007 after seeing them play the Metro in Sydney, love the dolls.
Ronnie, do you think any of the people you teach guitar have any potential? :)
Definitely, it's great and refreshing to see another generation influenced by great music and driven to want to play it themselves.
So Ronnie, if Simmons is your real last name, does that mean you are a jew? haha
Haha, what an odd question. Well as my mother was raised protestant and my father raised catholic, now both atheists that means I'm none of the above. I think I could have Jewish heritage way back in my bloodline but I really wouldn't know, either way, I'll See You In Hell ;)
Ronnie! Joey Ramone called, He wants his haircut back!
hahaha, hey I bought it off ebay fair n square ok?!
Awesome!! People probs think whatever happened to that Ronnie kid, then you see on poster supporting Angry!
Haha probably, as corny as it sounds it really just does go to show that you should follow your heart, not what other people tell you to.
I remember my first "girlfriend" all those years ago when I was 13 and posing playing Ace Frehley solos in front of the mirror broke up with me because "the 'Kiss thing' was getting weird".
Guess I got the last laugh huh? haha
When you met Ace Frehley did you get to hear his famous laugh?
Haha I wish, he's sober now! We got glimpses of it, but not anything as full on as on the Tom Snyder show.
Ronnie how long have you being playing guitar for and do you remember your first gig?
This is my tenth year of playing guitar, so nearly half my life!
I remember all my firsts, I'm very sentimental haha.
The first gig I ever played I was 13 at the school talent quest. I got dressed up as Gene Simmons, in the make up and everything, drooled and spat blood everywhere, made my own costume, even stuck foam to the bottom of a pair of sneakers to make platforms and got up all by myself (no-one else liked Kiss, I was the "weird kid") and played and sang "Rock and Roll All Night". I didn't win, but I made a few girls scream (in horror when they saw me drooling blood) I thought that was pretty cool.
Little did I know 8 years later I'd be opening up for Ace Frehley around the country!
Hey Ronnie, what is your dream guitar?? Or if you already have it, what is it??
Hey WIll!
A 70's white Gibson Les Paul Custom, so I almost already have it haha, mines a 2003.

What was the best advice you've ever received?
"Ronnie, quit your job, practice your instrument for 8 hours a day and live off your girlfriend" - Mickey Dee, Motorhead 2007
If you had to take one of the following names, which would you pick & why? 1.Zany Porn Heroes 2.Major Rainbow Madness 3.Dance Dance Hair Salon Fever 4.Underwater Sex Jihad 5.Fruity Spider World 6.High-speed Wizard Bastards. I'm out of ideas.
High-speed Wizard Bastards, definitely. It sounds like the title of a whacked out Motorhead song
You guys seem to be less glam than you used to be. Whas this a decision or did it just kinda happen?
It just happened, we've always considered ourselves a rock and roll band first and foremost.
So I got these snakes right, and they're sort of illegal but I wanna tattoo L.U.S.T. on his belly. So I can't keep this snake right I wondered if you were coming through Sydney sometime soon and I will sell you this snake for a burger or somethin.
We're in Sydney right now, L.U.S.T. snake burgers sound tasty
did any of you go to newtown high? i swear i recognise this band... besides all the spam lol
Yeah I did 'til I was "asked to leave"

Is the riff from "Wanna Get Drunk" all downstrokes? Because they's some mighty fast downstrokes.
Yep, ALL down strokes! By the time we finished recording that I thought my arm was going to fall off!

Ron, why have I no seen you play the JEM in ages?! Also, what was your setup for recording the album gear wise, you got some sweet rhythm tones man
I was actually playing it right now as I read this!
I've been sticking with my Gibson Les Paul Custom live because (aside from it being awesome) I'm now a part of the Gibson guitars family. They've been very very good to me and I wouldn't want to be unfaithful.
Thanks dude! Recording gear wise I used a combination of Pete's Hughes and Kettner Triamp MkII and his Marshall 30th anniversary head run into a Marshall 1960A cab, crunch channels for the rhythm guitars and lead channels for the solos/leads.
Guitar wise I used so many guitars it's almost become a blur, for the guts of it I mainly used a couple of Gibson Les Paul standards. On top of that I used a Les Paul SG custom, Les Paul Jr., the Jem, a Peavey Wolfgang and a Fender Tele.
Live however I use the lead channel for all of my distorted sound, it just has more guts seeings there's only one of me.
I really want to get my hands on a Gibson Les Paul Axcess, I know for a lot of people putting a floyd rose into a Les Paul is almost sacrilege but there are a few parts live that I wish I could recreate but can't with the fixed bridge... plus I couldn't give a shit, I think it's pretty cool, I mean Steve Clark pulled it off.
do you guys answer ALL your questions? are there any that you leave out?
We try to, it's hard to answer them ALL as so many constantly keep coming in, and we generally ignore the abusive ones after having a good laugh.
Ronnie did it hurt getting the Ramones eagle tattooed on your back and does getting tattoo hurt in general?
Hell yeah it hurt!
Still haven't had it finished yet, gotta put the arrows into the shield right on my spine. It's by far the most painful tat I've had done, then again it's also the biggest.
All tattoos hurt, some just more than others.
-Ronnie
When are you guys coming back to Adelaide?! You fucking RAWKED at Enigma and I'd kill to see you guys again. Pretty sure everyone there feels the same.
Hopefully one more time before the end of the year! We'll definitely keep you posted, we love Adelaide!

What's the story behind the Les Paul Standard no longer in Ronnie's possession?
Haha oh god...
Alright.
Well, there was a young girl who was a fan of the band who after sleeping with a few times (oblivious to me, as usual) began to have "feelings" for me. I entered a relationship with another girl and she continued to carry a torch, so in her mind a way to win me over was to give me her tobacco burst Gibson Les Paul standard.
I couldn't believe it, nobody had ever given me something like that before, in a messenger conversation discussing the guitar she said "it's yours to do what you want with" so I took a screen shot and saved it.
As L.U.S.T. went into the studio to record the album that would become First Tattoo I used the Les Paul to record a lot of the rhythm guitars and some leads, it was a great sounding guitar, the girl offered to help out coming into the studio filming sessions and giving me lifts, even attempted to become best friends with the girl I was with, started dressing like her, changed her hair to be the same as hers. I was incredibly flattered, eventually we slept together again.
I made it incredibly clear that there was nothing serious going on between us and there never would be. After we had finished tracking the album, one day the girl I was with broke up with me, I had no idea why. It turns out the girl who had given me the guitar had told her I had been with another girl whilst on tour in an attempt to break us up so she could have me all to herself.
So I came clean about sleeping with the girl who had given me the guitar behind her back, apologized, we got back together, I sold the guitar & spent the money on getting the Ramones eagle tattooed the size of my back.
One afternoon we were sound checking at the Gaelic club in Sydney and I kept getting calls from an anonymous number, eventually I found out it was the girls father, she had lied to him and said I'd stolen the guitar, he said that if I didn't pay him the cost of the guitar he was going to take me to court. So I sent him the screen shot I had taken and that was the end of that.
It's not something I'd do again, and I do miss playing that guitar, but it was cursed.
-Ronnie.
Would you ever consider bringing in another guitarist to join LUST?
We've often thought about it, I like the freedom of being the only guitarist in L.U.S.T. however I do miss having another axeman to bounce ideas off and feed off onstage.
Like having Joel up from Torch Le Monde at the Gaelic was awesome because we were able to recreate harmonies live. For now I'm going to continue being in charge of all things six stringed, but I definitely wouldn't rule out the possibility of us welcoming another guitarist into the L.U.S.T. family in the future.

Hey Ronnie, What Guitar/Guitars did you use for recording the album??? Kickass album by the way!
I used a few actually, the guts of it all was mainly a Gibson Les Paul Standard (that is no longer in my possession, however that's another story) along with my Gibson Les Paul Jr.
However I also used an Ibanez Jem for a lot of lead work, as well as a Peavey Wolfgang and a Fender Telecaster.

I got one of Sindy's broken drumsticks. Can l.u.s.t. come back to Melbourne so I can get another one and have a matching set? :)

Do you guys spend ages sitting in cars and vans? What kinda stuff do you do to stop yourself from going mad?
We spend hours sitting in cars and vans on tour, we DO go mad. We listen to every song we can possibly get our hands on, crack jokes, moon other drivers, eat junk food, get high, drink, and discuss everything you could possibly imagine in an attempt to stay sane. Someone will be occasionally trying to read, or sleep, I'll often draw or write lyrics. By the time we get out of the van we're definitely on our own wavelength, more often than not people around us think we have gone completely mad. It's great!

Is it true you guys only eat Hungry Jacks and Slurpees?
By day. By night we feed on the blood of the innocent.
Mikey told me he'd buy me a drink if I could beat him at N64 Mario Kart. Think I have a chance?
I highly doubt it. On tour in Hobart he was so drunk he managed to fall over the table into the television and still managed to beat everyone. Still, it;s worth a shot, never say never... but if you lose, you better buy him a drink!

What advice do you have for somebody writing songs?
Get out and live life, don't hold back on anything. Love with all your heart until it breaks, don't go looking for them, but win and lose some fights mental or physical. Honesty with yourself is the key to writing. Write about what you know.

How long has L.U.S.T. been together for?
Sindy & I have been making music since we were snotty teenage punks in 2004, Mikey came into the picture in 2005.
L.U.S.T. actually started in 2006 and Mikey started singing for us in 2007.
Chris blew us away and jumped on board in Feb. this year for the Ace Frehley tour and has been with us ever since.

Who designed the L.U.S.T. logo and what inspired it?
I drew the original sketch and had it redrawn by tattoo artist Karl Kaufmann. It was never originally conceived to be the L.U.S.T. logo, it was just a tattoo I got when i was 18, mine reads "True Lust".
It's a caricature & parody of the whole biblical concept of the sin lust, the forbidden fruit & the serpent from the garden of Eden. Hence why there's a switchblade through the apple and the snake is wearing a crown.
When we were sitting around scratching our heads trying to come up with a logo I suggested use my tattoo and change "True Lust" to just "L.U.S.T.". The logo you see is actually a photoshopped photo taken of my arm, if you look closely the leaf of the apple next to the "T" in "L.U.S.T." isn't pointy like the others, that's the curve of my arm!
-Ronnie
get ya ass's too adelaide already!
Alright, geeez! We'll be accompanying our asses to Adelaide on Saturday the 11th of September. Playing the Enigma Bar with our good mates, Diamond Sins.

so glad my question about the tattoos finally got answered, been heapps anxious to see what you cool cats had to say, i love all the stories behind ronnies, and generally just love sindys answers to anything, hes amazingly and ridiculously hilarious
It was a big question! Our first reactions were "ALL of them?! Really?!" but we did it!
-Ronnie
Whats the story behind all of Ronnies and Sindy's tattoos?
RONNIE:
ALL of them? man that's a long story. I'll start at the beginning, I got my first one when I was 16 (early 2005) on my top right arm. I'd always wanted one/them since I can remember, from drawing the Ramones eagle or the Kiss army logo on myself in class with permanent marker and white out in early high school to actually going and getting it done. The bass player in the Skanks, Matty, had a bunch and when he went to get them done it became real for me that if i can get into a bar/venue and play a gig and buy drinks all night at 15/16, I could go get tattooed.
I drew up a skull that had my long black hair and shades on with the two guitars I was playing at the time (B.C. Rich Warlock & Gibson Les Paul) in my School Cert. Exam in year 10 (2004) then it was just a matter of saving up the money and getting it done.
After that came a rose on the opposite arm a few months later, which a girl insisted on paying for at the time. Later I drew up a half black & red heart with devil and angel wings with "rocker" in scrolls, inspired by Axl Rose's. The day I got kicked out of high school in late 2005 I wasn't even there, I was skipping school, drinking with a girl, then in some rebellious stand went to the tat shop & got it done.
For my 18th I got a red headed pin up inspired by the girl I was with at the time and "girls, girls, girls" in scrolls on my left upper arm, because of a personal connection between her, myself & the Motley Crue song (that and I'm a sucker for a redhead).
After meeting Sebastian Bach when he came out in 2006 he hand wrote "Youth Gone Wild" under my first tattoo and I had it tattooed over.
After seeing the New York Dolls live I got "Lipstick Killer" in hot pink Dolls font on the inside of my left arm (after the record "Lipstick Killers").
I had always been playing with the idea of getting a "True Lust" tattoo, (which was actually a Skanks song) and drew up a snake wrapped around an apple with a switchblade through it, had it redrawn and tattooed on my right arm, and as a tribute to Bon Scott got "Ron" under it, who also had a snake and knife with "Ron" under it in the same place.
Next came a diamond with "Dream On" in-between my girls & lipstick killer tat. Which I got while working in a factory, as well as being an Aerosmith song, it was to remind myself why I really get out of bed in the morning. I also added black and red cobwebs and "1988" around my first tattoo because that's when I was born.
On my chest in scrolls I have a heart with "Too Much Too Soon", (after the New York Dolls album and a song I later wrote) to commemorate the loss of someone who meant a lot to me who took her own life.
I have the Social Distortion skeleton on my outer right calf, which is pretty self explanatory, and the Ramones eagle the size of my back (come a long way from drawing it on myself with whiteout and permanent marker in school).
When I got my full motorcycle license I got the skull and pistons from the back of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's jackets in Marlon Brando's the Wild One with "Whaddya got?" surrounded by flames.
On my inner right calf to celebrate the start of recording our album I got Ace Frehley's first solo album (the first vinyl record I ever bought) portrait, which later when I found out we were supporting Ace Frehley I freaked out and had it signed and tattooed between sound check and hitting the stage of the Enmore Theatre! (home turf - I'm a Newtown kid)
After a drinking binge in Melbourne for the launch of MTV Classics, that me, Sindy and our tour manager attended, our tour manager (who is also a good friend) and I decided to get matching tattoos. So now on the back of my upper left arm I have Pepe Le Pew, because he's French and I'm secretly a hopeless romantic.
I then started work on my left fore arm, on the inside for another one of the few girls I have had something special with, I have a pin up with black hair and my Gibson Les Paul Jr. double cutaway. Recently on the outside I added the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers "D.T.K. L.A.M.F." (Down To Kill, Like A Mother Fucker) heart skull and dagger and I plan on tying the two in together.
So that brings us up to speed haha, it's quite a read I know, and there are definitely a lot more to come!
-Ronnie
SINDY:
In order of addition to skin:
In 2005 I had my Hairy Skull with burning ears on my arm: Well, I like skulls... and flames instantly make things super-cool. I nicknamed the skull 'Spike'. And by moving my skin just right, he can answer "No" to most questions.
Pirate ship (Right Shoulder): In 2007 my girlfriend and I set sail for scurvy-dog Karl Kaufmann for matching pirate-ships. What good is a pirate without a ship... Yarr!
Troublesome Roses (left forearm):
In 2008 I got three roses, one for each my Mum, Dad and sister Lucy. The roses are surrounded by a firm layer of mayhem. There's a snake, iron crosses, token-skull and a tonne of eyeballs going on. This ones another Karl piece, and looks f**king cool aside from everything else.
Anchor (right arm):
In 2009 I Was shocked to find that my ship doesn't have an anchor! So I asked my disgustingly-attractive housemate Mattoo to hook me up (pun intended) with an anchor. Does this mean I'm anchoring myself? Nope, the ropes cut.
"Born To Raise Hell" Chest-Piece:
Recently I've got knuckle-dusters and "Born To Hell" on my chest, another Mattoo master-piece. It's a self-explanatory disclaimer. Trouble seems to follow me and perhaps it's not such a coincidence. This is the first of my five tattoos that doesn't have a skull in it somewhere... yet.
What's next?
Dunno, might get some more skulls.
Live fast, die pirate.
- Sindy

I then started work on my left fore arm, on the inside for another one of the few girls I have had something special with, I have a pin up with black hair and my Gibson Les Paul Jr. double cutaway. Recently on the outside I added the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers "D.T.K. L.A.M.F." (Down To Kill, Like A Mother Fucker) heart skull and dagger and I plan on tying the two in together.
So that brings us up to speed haha, it's quite a read I know, and there are definitely a lot more to come!

Does this mean I'm anchoring myself...? Nope, the ropes cut.
"Born To Raise Hell" Chest-Piece:
Recently I've got knuckle-dusters and "Born To Hell" on my chest, another Mattoo master-piece. It's a self-explanatory disclaimer. Trouble seems to follow me and perhaps it's not such a coincidence. This is the first of my five tattoos that doesn't have a skull in it somewhere... yet.
What's next...?
Dunno, might get some more skulls.
Live fast, die pirate.

I have the Social Distortion skeleton on my outer left calf, which is pretty self explanatory, and the Ramones eagle the size of my back (come a long way from drawing it on myself with whiteout and permanent marker in school).
On my inner left calf to celebrate the start of recording our album I got Ace Frehley's first solo album (the first vinyl record I ever bought) portrait, which later when I found out we were supporting Ace Frehley I freaked out and had it signed and tattooed between sound check and hitting the stage of the Enmore Theatre! (home turf - I'm a Newtown kid)

Hey Ronnie what amps do you use and what pedals are your rig?
I run a Hughes and Kettner Trilogy head through 2 4x12 speaker cabinets that were custom made for myself.
I've always been a 'plug & play' kinda guy when it comes to pedals, a Gibson guitar straight into the front of a high gain tube head. All the distortion I need is from the H&K, I run a G-Labs Wowee Wah (that pedal is seriously cool!) through the front of my amp, and through the fx loop an MXR Boost/Line Driver, Boss DD7 digital delay & Boss Tuner.

What type of kit does Sindy use for touring? Those drums look massive.
My current touring kit is made by Fibes, from the United States.
The kick is a back-breaking 26", with a 13" rack tom and 18" floor tom. Those three drums have chrome-covered fiberglass shells, with the addition of about 40 unecessary large bolts (for that Mad Max effect).
Snare is a Pearl - 14" x 7" Maple Snare (with spiked lugs).
I also have a 1960's Ludwig Super Classic I sometimes use.
I use all Paiste cymbals and I prefer Aquarian heads.
All my hardware lives in two large traps cases, which refer to as my "Boxes Of Doom". You'd understand why I call them that if you ever had to carry one :)
You name it, I've broken it... so I've spent a lot of time putting this bastard together and I'm constantly pulling it's brains out to make sure it's tour-tough.

Ronnie what's you're favorite L.U.S.T song?
Ah man I can't pick just one... It all depends on what mood I'm in and what I'm doing. If I'm pissed off, First Tattoo, if "I Wanna Get Drunk", if I hear some one's been bitching about me Bad Reputation, if I wanna ride my motorcycle Outlaw... What's your favorite L.U.S.T. song?

What music do you guys normally listen to in the tour bus?
Everything! Lots of Ramones, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Screaming Jets, Aerosmith... the list is endless. It's fun trying to get some sleep while Pantera is being blasted at full volume haha I highly recommend it.

What's each band memebers favourite song to perform?
"I don't like songs, I like beer." - Mikey
"Runaway, 'cause it's badass as fuck and breaks the most sticks." - Sindy
"Fight Fire With Fire, I really get to cut loose on the guitar. Lots of killer harmonics and harmonies, the feedback I create into the breakdown always gets me off. Over all just a kickass song." - Ronnie
"Get 'em Out, I love the freedom to mess around in the solo and bridge. Lots of cool octave stuff and I get to improvise more than what's on the album." - Chris

What type and size drumsticks does Sindy use?
I play (and have an endorsement with) Artbeat Drumsticks. They're based in Germany and make a f**kin unbreakable 2B.
Made from American Hickery with a wooden-tip... they've got my name and signature printed on them too :)

When did you guys start L.U.S.T ? And how did you guys form the band?
L.U.S.T. started in 2006, with Sindy and myself continuing our musical partnership from the ashes of our previous band "The Skanks" which broke up because I put something somewhere I shouldn't have.
We met in 2004 through a school friend of his who ran into me in Newtown outside my highschool, thought I looked like a Ramone and decided to form a band. Mikey actually played bass in The Skanks right before we broke up in 2005 for two shows, then in 2007 in search of a new singer, he blew us away with his voice and it was like "how come you never told us you could sing like that?!"
Chris jumped on board right before the Ace Frehley tour when our last bass player quit, and now here we are. We've been though a lot of musicians (three other guitarists, two other bass players and another singer) to build the tight unit that we have now, and we've become more like brothers than a band.

What guitars does Ronnie play and why?
I play a few guitars, the ones I primarily use live right now are a Gibson Les Paul Jr. double cutaway and a Gibson Flying V.
My Les Paul Jr. has become my Holy Grail, I love it's full yet almost obnoxiously biting sound. Being the entire guitar sound of L.U.S.T. I have to sound as big as possible.
The P90 sound really appeals to me being a huge fan of 70s punk bands and Johnny Thunders, however the 60 cycle hum would drive me insane because I run such a high gain amp. So I wired a Lindy Fralin hum canceling P90 into it myself which works perfectly.
When I want to get that real classic Gibson humbucker sound, with the option of either a wailing bridge pick up or smooth neck pickup, I use my Flying V. Like the double cutaway I love the all neck access (and look!) and still can't believe such a big sound comes out of such a light guitar. That axe went around the whole country with me (even to Bon Scott's grave) on the Ace Frehley tour.

Do you have any scars on your body? If so, how'd you get them?
Yeah I've got scars. A couple years back, I was dancing around on the roof of a parked car while our (at the time) bass player fooled around with some lady-friend in an alleyway.
It had be raining and I slipped off the roof and fell ass first through the back windscreen of the car. I smashed straight through it!
...spent the rest of the night picking pieces of glass outta my ass, legs and lower-back. And now I have stupidity scars to show for my awesome efforts haha!

What inspired the song 'First Tattoo'?
Well I'm always singled out for the way I look and dress, so over the years there's always been people (jocks, lads, and the "fully sick" type) who want to criticize what they don't understand with their fist. We used to drink in one of many ally ways off Oxford street in Sydney and would get into trouble with someone nearly every time, and part of the way I look is tattoos. I remember feeling invincible after I had my first one done when I was 16 years old. Put all that in combination with people constantly telling me how I "should" live MY life (morally, ethically, career wise, socially etc.) and the fact I was listening to a lot of the Ramones, Rancid & The Sex Pistols at the time and out of that came First Tattoo. Ironically the day I wrote it, me & a couple of friends were going to a party in Rockdale and at the train station a group of the "fully sick" type picked a fight and started spitting on us simply for how we looked...
"Hey you, fuck you, don't try and tell me what to do."
