Who designed the L.U.S.T. logo and what inspired it?

I drew the original sketch and had it redrawn by tattoo artist Karl Kaufmann. It was never originally conceived to be the L.U.S.T. logo, it was just a tattoo I got when i was 18, mine reads "True Lust".

It's a caricature & parody of the whole biblical concept of the sin lust, the forbidden fruit & the serpent from the garden of Eden. Hence why there's a switchblade through the apple and the snake is wearing a crown.

When we were sitting around scratching our heads trying to come up with a logo I suggested use my tattoo and change "True Lust" to just "L.U.S.T.". The logo you see is actually a photoshopped photo taken of my arm, if you look closely the leaf of the apple next to the "T" in "L.U.S.T." isn't pointy like the others, that's the curve of my arm!

so glad my question about the tattoos finally got answered, been heapps anxious to see what you cool cats had to say, i love all the stories behind ronnies, and generally just love sindys answers to anything, hes amazingly and ridiculously hilarious

It was a big question! Our first reactions were "ALL of them?! Really?!" but we did it!

Ask me anything

Whats the story behind all of Ronnies and Sindy's tattoos?

RONNIE:
ALL of them? man that's a long story. I'll start at the beginning, I got my first one when I was 16 (early 2005) on my top right arm. I'd always wanted one/them since I can remember, from drawing the Ramones eagle or the Kiss army logo on myself in class with permanent marker and white out in early high school to actually going and getting it done. The bass player in the Skanks, Matty, had a bunch and when he went to get them done it became real for me that if i can get into a bar/venue and play a gig and buy drinks all night at 15/16, I could go get tattooed.

I drew up a skull that had my long black hair and shades on with the two guitars I was playing at the time (B.C. Rich Warlock & Gibson Les Paul) in my School Cert. Exam in year 10 (2004) then it was just a matter of saving up the money and getting it done.

After that came a rose on the opposite arm a few months later, which a girl insisted on paying for at the time. Later I drew up a half black & red heart with devil and angel wings with "rocker" in scrolls, inspired by Axl Rose's. The day I got kicked out of high school in late 2005 I wasn't even there, I was skipping school, drinking with a girl, then in some rebellious stand went to the tat shop & got it done.

For my 18th I got a red headed pin up inspired by the girl I was with at the time and "girls, girls, girls" in scrolls on my left upper arm, because of a personal connection between her, myself & the Motley Crue song (that and I'm a sucker for a redhead).

After meeting Sebastian Bach when he came out in 2006 he hand wrote "Youth Gone Wild" under my first tattoo and I had it tattooed over.

After seeing the New York Dolls live I got "Lipstick Killer" in hot pink Dolls font on the inside of my left arm (after the record "Lipstick Killers").

I had always been playing with the idea of getting a "True Lust" tattoo, (which was actually a Skanks song) and drew up a snake wrapped around an apple with a switchblade through it, had it redrawn and tattooed on my right arm, and as a tribute to Bon Scott got "Ron" under it, who also had a snake and knife with "Ron" under it in the same place.

Next came a diamond with "Dream On" in-between my girls & lipstick killer tat. Which I got while working in a factory, as well as being an Aerosmith song, it was to remind myself why I really get out of bed in the morning. I also added black and red cobwebs and "1988" around my first tattoo because that's when I was born.

On my chest in scrolls I have a heart with "Too Much Too Soon", (after the New York Dolls album and a song I later wrote) to commemorate the loss of someone who meant a lot to me who took her own life.

I have the Social Distortion skeleton on my outer right calf, which is pretty self explanatory, and the Ramones eagle the size of my back (come a long way from drawing it on myself with whiteout and permanent marker in school).
When I got my full motorcycle license I got the skull and pistons from the back of the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's jackets in Marlon Brando's the Wild One with "Whaddya got?" surrounded by flames.
On my inner right calf to celebrate the start of recording our album I got Ace Frehley's first solo album (the first vinyl record I ever bought) portrait, which later when I found out we were supporting Ace Frehley I freaked out and had it signed and tattooed between sound check and hitting the stage of the Enmore Theatre! (home turf - I'm a Newtown kid)

After a drinking binge in Melbourne for the launch of MTV Classics, that me, Sindy and our tour manager attended, our tour manager (who is also a good friend) and I decided to get matching tattoos. So now on the back of my upper left arm I have Pepe Le Pew, because he's French and I'm secretly a hopeless romantic.

I then started work on my left fore arm, on the inside for another one of the few girls I have had something special with, I have a pin up with black hair and my Gibson Les Paul Jr. double cutaway. Recently on the outside I added the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers "D.T.K. L.A.M.F." (Down To Kill, Like A Mother Fucker) heart skull and dagger and I plan on tying the two in together.

So that brings us up to speed haha, it's quite a read I know, and there are definitely a lot more to come!

SINDY:

In order of addition to skin:

In 2005 I had my Hairy Skull with burning ears on my arm: Well, I like skulls... and flames instantly make things super-cool. I nicknamed the skull 'Spike'. And by moving my skin just right, he can answer "No" to most questions.

Pirate ship (Right Shoulder): In 2007 my girlfriend and I set sail for scurvy-dog Karl Kaufmann for matching pirate-ships. What good is a pirate without a ship... Yarr!

Troublesome Roses (left forearm):
In 2008 I got three roses, one for each my Mum, Dad and sister Lucy. The roses are surrounded by a firm layer of mayhem. There's a snake, iron crosses, token-skull and a tonne of eyeballs going on. This ones another Karl piece, and looks f**king cool aside from everything else.

Anchor (right arm):
In 2009 I Was shocked to find that my ship doesn't have an anchor! So I asked my disgustingly-attractive housemate Mattoo to hook me up (pun intended) with an anchor. Does this mean I'm anchoring myself? Nope, the ropes cut.

"Born To Raise Hell" Chest-Piece:
Recently I've got knuckle-dusters and "Born To Hell" on my chest, another Mattoo master-piece. It's a self-explanatory disclaimer. Trouble seems to follow me and perhaps it's not such a coincidence. This is the first of my five tattoos that doesn't have a skull in it somewhere... yet.

What's next?
Dunno, might get some more skulls.
Live fast, die pirate.

Hey Ronnie what amps do you use and what pedals are your rig?

I run a Hughes and Kettner Trilogy head through 2 4x12 speaker cabinets that were custom made for myself.

I've always been a 'plug & play' kinda guy when it comes to pedals, a Gibson guitar straight into the front of a high gain tube head. All the distortion I need is from the H&K, I run a G-Labs Wowee Wah (that pedal is seriously cool!) through the front of my amp, and through the fx loop an MXR Boost/Line Driver, Boss DD7 digital delay & Boss Tuner.

What type of kit does Sindy use for touring? Those drums look massive.

My current touring kit is made by Fibes, from the United States.
The kick is a back-breaking 26", with a 13" rack tom and 18" floor tom. Those three drums have chrome-covered fiberglass shells, with the addition of about 40 unecessary large bolts (for that Mad Max effect).

Snare is a Pearl - 14" x 7" Maple Snare (with spiked lugs).
I also have a 1960's Ludwig Super Classic I sometimes use.
I use all Paiste cymbals and I prefer Aquarian heads.

All my hardware lives in two large traps cases, which refer to as my "Boxes Of Doom". You'd understand why I call them that if you ever had to carry one :)

You name it, I've broken it... so I've spent a lot of time putting this bastard together and I'm constantly pulling it's brains out to make sure it's tour-tough.

Ronnie what's you're favorite L.U.S.T song?

Ah man I can't pick just one... It all depends on what mood I'm in and what I'm doing. If I'm pissed off, First Tattoo, if "I Wanna Get Drunk", if I hear some one's been bitching about me Bad Reputation, if I wanna ride my motorcycle Outlaw... What's your favorite L.U.S.T. song?
